For generations, Ōmanu Surf Life Saving Club has stood watch over one of New Zealand’s most loved beaches — protecting swimmers, building community, and shaping young lives through surf lifesaving.
Established in 1947 as the Ōmanu Pacific Surf Life Saving Club, the club was founded in response to the growing number of families holidaying and swimming along the Mount Maunganui coastline. What began as a small group of passionate volunteers quickly became an important part of the local community.
Throughout the decades, the club has evolved alongside the beach itself. Historic photographs from Tauranga City Libraries show members constantly improving the facilities and protecting the coastline. In 1965, a new ramp and retaining wall were added to the pavilion, helping strengthen access and resilience around the clubrooms during a period of significant growth. Around the same time, members were also actively working to combat coastal erosion along the dunes — a reminder that caring for the beach has always been part of the club’s story.
As the Bay of Plenty population expanded, so did the club. In 1990, Ōmanu helped establish the Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club, supporting the growing communities further east while continuing to strengthen its own identity at Ōmanu Beach.
In the early 2000s, the club recognised the need for a modern facility to support the next generation of lifeguards and members. After years of fundraising, planning, and community support, a new clubhouse was completed in 2006 — creating the home the club still operates from today.
Today, Ōmanu Surf Life Saving Club is one of the largest and most respected surf clubs in New Zealand, with hundreds of active members and one of the country’s largest junior surf programmes. Yet despite the growth, the heart of the club remains unchanged: a family-focused community built on volunteerism, beach safety, youth development, and a shared love for the ocean.
From the original pavilion to today’s modern facilities, every generation has played a role in building the club into what it is today — and ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come.
